Kentucky Derby Thoughts

May 5, 2008

They should have saved the horse…and euthanized the damn jockey!!!  A horse doesn’t shatter two legs after she crosses the finish line…unless the horse was already in trouble before the finish line…or got pulled up too early after the race was done!!!

A Little NCAA Tourney Trash Talk

March 19, 2008

So the folks over at Passion 4 Planting…the guys that do the Exponential Conference…asked me to be a part of a online NCAA Tournament with some other big names in the church blogging world.  Now I’ll be the first to admit that I know very little about basketball…but I do know God…and He already knows who is going to win the whole enchilada.  With that in mind I signed up, prayed over the teams and made my bracket choices.  I am a lock to win the entire thing…because I went spiritual with the whole thing…and I’m convinced my prayer life is better than Mark Batterson, Dave Ferguson, Shawn Lovejoy and Vince Antonucci:-)

By the way…if you guys want to get in on the action…it’s open to everyone….just sign up here.  You can also keep up with all of the trash talking and results by going over to the Planting Space blog.

Dear Urban Meyer

January 1, 2008

Our guys were dancing on the Michigan logo before the game?  It’s called “no class”.  Please make sure that this is eliminated before next season.

Our guys were talking smack after almost every play?  It’s called “immaturity”.  Please make sure that this is eliminated before next season.

Tebow and Harvin was used almost exclusively as the offensive game plan?  It’s called “zero depth”.  Please make sure that this is eliminated before next season.

Continuing to call for short passes out of the shot gun when the offensive line had been blown out all day?  It’s called “insanity”.  Please make sure that this is eliminated before next season.

Fourth down and long on your own 25-yard line with over 2 minutes left in the game and all your time outs still left…and you go for it?  It’s called “poor coaching”.  Please make sure that this is eliminated before next season.

Showing your anger at your players when it’s obviously not their fault?  It’s called “no leadership”.  Please make sure that this is eliminated before next season.

If you do not feel that these areas need to be eliminated…then please don’t get angry when you are eliminated as Florida’s head coach.  It may have been acceptable at Utah and Bowling Green…but it’s not the way we roll down here in Florida!!!

Congrats To Steve Carr

December 30, 2007

Congratulations to Steve Carr who made a stellar comeback…and beat me in the blogging pastors league’s fantasy football Super Bowl by 11 points (so far…he still has one more player that could rack up more points this evening).  It was a fun season…I played in three different leagues….though I did the best in blogging pastor’s league.  Second place isn’t so bad…at least I did better than this very girly guy!!!  :-)

Thanks to Matt Mehaffey, Travis Johnson, Dave Anderson, Bob Franquiz, David Boggs, Michael Lukaszewski, Troy McMahon, Mark Nelson…and especially the league champion Steve Carr…for letting me be a part of the fun.

Time Out For Evel

November 30, 2007

Evel KnievelIt is being reported that Evel Knievel passed away today. As a child of the 70’s he was the biggest hero in my neighborhood. The ramps my friends and I jumped on our bikes…not to mention the scrapes, cut and bruises…were a elementary kid’s tribute to Evel’s daredevil lifestyle. I had the Evel Knievel toy…I had the Evel Knievel bicycle…I had the Evel Knievel lunch box. If he was on the “Wide World Of Sports“…I was glued to the television.

Back in my comedy days I had a routine talking about how he inspired me to almost kill myself trying to jump my bike over the neighborhood creek. It always went over well with the audience and ended up on one of my records. When I moved to Florida I used to fly out of Tampa to dates and had the privilege of meeting Evel on one of those flights (he also lived in the Tampa area). He was very gracious…spent an hour talking with me…and patiently answered all of my questions (and listened to me talk about Christ). I gave him a compact disc with the “Evel Knievel” routine on it before we got off the plane. Weeks later I got the coolest letter from him saying how much he liked it.

I was thrilled last year to find out that he’d come to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. It is nice to know that I will get to see my childhood hero again some day…in Glory. Until then…he will be remembered fondly in the Elrod house…and missed.
