I fear that Christianity has become a ongoing case of “either/or” in the 21st Century. Apparently just taking up the cause of Christ in the world is not dangerous, hip or fulfilling enough. Followers in Christ…Christians…seem more preoccupied with choosing a side…than truly living all out for the Kingdom of God. It doesn’t seem to be enough just to solely call ourselves Christians…we now feel a need to tack on other descriptions…and identities. Traditional or emerging. Southern Baptist or Methodist. Calvinist or Arminian. Libertarian or Green Party. African American or Caucasian. The list is unending…and defeating to reaching the world…the entire world…for Christ.
Our only identification as ministers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ should be Christian. When we begin to identify as Democrat or Republican…modern or post modern…pre-Millenial or post-Millenial…house church or multi-site…even black or white…we forfeit the neutrality that allows us to reach the most people we can for the cause of Christ. If there is one hill to die on in today’s cultural and society…it must be…it can only be…the Kingdom of God. When we pick up the battle sword of another cause…no matter how noble…we are serving two masters. If the annuls of war have taught us anything…it is that you can’t fight on two fronts…and win. The moment we take a side and say that one demographic is more deserving of hearing the truths of God’s Word than another…the further we get from the example of the life that Christ lived. The more we identify ourselves…and thus identify our ministries and churches…with something other than God…the more we show the world we have more faith and hope…in something other than our Heavenly Father.
