A Healthy Church Plans

Over the last few months God has really been laying on my heart the need to evaluate every area of Compass Point in order to determine whether we are a healthy church.  I truly believe we are healthy, but in studying other healthy churches I have come to realize that we can be even better at a couple of things.  Why is health an important element in church?  Because healthy things grow…and are able to sustain growth.  All of the marketing, outreach events and advertising can’t hold a candle to a fully developed Christian investing in people far from God and inviting them to church.  Healthy churches produce healthy Christians which makes for healthy outreach and discipleship for the Kingdom of God.

One of the things I have noticed about healthy churches is that they plan…and plan well.  By planning well I mean they…

  1. plan for the vision of the church first and foremost…
  2. keep it simple with only a few actual events each year…
  3. plan far enough in advance to implement well…
  4. plan on having enough finances, volunteers and resources to accommodate…
  5. intentionally plan for spiritual and numerical growth…
  6. plan on God moving mightily…

Two weeks ago the Compass Point Senior Management Team (SMT) spent some time planning out most of 2010.  While there is still some “wiggle room” for the later half of the year…everything at Compass Point through July is planned in detail.  If you don’t believe me go check the online calendar (we still have the details to post…but the events and sermon series are listed).  When planning we really tried to talk through and be mindful of the six things above.  We kept the planned events to strictly things we wanted to celebrate and call attention to.  We planned sermon series that will stretch Compass Point as well as present the Gospel in a clear manner to unchurched people.  We developed several semesters of Sunday Night Bible Studies to help people grow in their knowledge of God’s Word.  Mainly we wanted to plan better…organize better…and implement better…so we can be a healthier church.

My hope is that all of our Team Leaders and staff will take the six things above into account when planning for the areas of ministry they oversee.  A healthy church doesn’t just happened…it take intentional effort from every leader working together as a team.  Compass Point is healthy…but better planning is helping us get even healthier!
